Used Heavy Machinery Questions asked

Open Question: Can someone please help correct my grammars?

In “Ground Zero” Suzanne Berne describing her trip to Manhattan’s financial district to pay her compliments, where the World Trade Center used to be located. On that day many people arrived from different locations to do the same thing as the author and to see “the wide emptiness where so many were lost”. My critical response to this reading assignment is that I think it is sad now when we look at the place where World Trade Center used to be at because “the space that is now ground zero”. It must be very heartbreaking to look at the Twin Towers now because it is just a construction site. I think that the author did a very good job for describing all the senses: sight, hear, touch, smell, and taste in this essay. An example of sight is “But to the out-of-towner, ground zero looks at first simply like a construction site. All the familiar details are there: the wooden scaffolding; the cranes; the bulldozers and forklifts; the trailers and construction workers in hard hats; even the dust.” An example of hear is “There is the pound of jackhammers, the steady beep-beep-beep of trucks backing up, the roar of heavy machinery.” An example of touch is “Finally he touched his son’s elbow and said: I watched those towers being built. I saw this place when they weren’t there.” An example of smell is “Back I walked, up Fulton Street, the smell of fish in the air, to wander around St. Paul’s.” And finally, an example of taste is the part that the author describing her pastrami sandwich and the consideration of herself as she ordered the sandwich. Overall, I think this essay is very well written because the author uses lots of details to describing what going on at the construction site of the World Trade Center which help us to picture out the scenes and the pain that the visitors feel when looking at it. more

Voting Question: Does Randstad drug test for all positions they recruit for?

I used to smoke pot. Albeit not a heavy user. But I am paranoid that I might fail if I get tested. My position that they are recruiting me for is in an HR department. So it's not like I am handling machinery or hazardous equipment. I don't smoke any more, but a week ago I got a little tipsy ( alcohol ) and smoked. Now I am paranoid. Any insight to their procedures would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: I have a Verizon Fios install (trench) Question..?

Hello. I received mail from verizon stating that I had verizon fios in my "area" I went online, put in my address and phone number to check availablity and it said they were available. so I spoke with a verizon sales rep, he signed me up for install on the 12th of december.. Now, Here's the deal... My current utilities are burried. and from the main street to my house is a good 150 feet or so. When I spoke with the sales rep he said it shouldn't be a problem, they wont charge me for any of the wiring, the installation is 100% free.. I'm just wondering if they will be able to dig a trench that long to give me fios access.. and how long does it usually take for them to dig a trench that long? Do they use heavy machinery that quickly moves along or is it going to be some dude with a shovel? I brought it up to another tech and she just had a kind of *duh it looks like its available* answer. Any input would help. is there anyone out there that was in the same situation as I am? more

Resolved Question: Is this a lesson in how to grow superweeds which outgrow our food crops?

Lessons in how to grow superweeds which outgrow our food crops. In the UK we have a long history of permanent agricultural weeds. This history of agriculture and our methods of agriculture mean we have, in effect, selectively bred, for persistent weeds. Man has evolved within his landscape, he has altered that natural landscape with his agricultural methods. Natural selection has favoured what have now become persistent weeds such as creeping thistle, couch grass, nettles etc. Individual species have evolved due to our agricultural methods, so if, for example, we look at dandelion growth patterns we can see this demonstrated. Dandelions can grow flat to the ground so they can no longer be mown off. They will grow up-right, vertical and tall until they are mown a few times, then they take on the new flat form so they pass under the mower or the scythe. Human attempts at eradication of these persistent weeds has actually led to their 'improvement' and made the situation worse; we have effectively selectively bred them. The difficulty is now in restoring the natural balance, so that they no longer have the competitive advantage. This is what Richard Dawkins would call an 'arms race'. It is escalating therefore both sides need to invest in order to retain the status-quo. From a human perspective this means even greater use of herbicides and fuel energy/human labour for ploughing etc. From our point of view (humans) this is counter productive. However, it is good for these persistent agricultural weeds as it is putting them at a competitive advantage over their compatriots. Persistent weeds have increasingly quicker recovery rates, they have persistence of propagation methods. If you leave in a small section of a root such as creeping thistle or couch grass, a new plant is able to regrow from that tiny section exceptionally quickly. It quickly outgrows all my vegetable plants. It appears from the quote below, the problem is wide spread: 'Then in the 1990s came Roundup Ready cotton, corn and soybeans, which meant machines could go through growing fields with heavy chemical applications of Roundup®, the Monsanto patented herbicide. But weeds have been getting smarter. The wimpy little ones like poke, ragweed or milk thistle have retired from the field, leaving hardier cousins to stand and fight. One of the hardy pigweeds, Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri), has been making a name for itself in South Georgia, because it has evolved resistance to glyphostate, Roundup’s active ingredient. Agronomists say the overuse of glyphostate herbicides is to blame for the amaranth explosion. The plant had already evolved resistances to dinitroanilines and acetolactate synthase inhibitors, and farmers that kept using Roundup year after year, regardless of the warnings, had their fields completely taken over when Roundup Ready Amaranth appeared. Palmer amaranth can grow as tall as 15 feet, although 6 feet is more common. Climate change is its best friend. It can continue to grow an inch a day even without water all summer, even when daily temperature tops 90°F (32°C). Its flowering tops put out half a million seeds per plant. One successful amaranth plant can seed an entire field for the following season. Full grown, the new superweed eats cotton picking machinery and spits out the metal parts. Some Georgia farmers have been forced into bankruptcy and abandoned their farms. The new strain is spreading in every direction and has farmers and extension agents worried from South Carolina to West Texas. Even Monsanto has no recommended solution. But then, Monsanto doesn’t sell hoes' The Happiness Plant re-published from The Permaculture Activist 70:44-46 (Winter 2008-09). more

Resolved Question: On ratchet and clank: going commando, how do I get the skill point for: Operating Heavy Machinery?

I read that you have to kill 10 robots using the crane. I'm not having much luck. Can I pick up a box and drop it on them? The little ones are way too quick. Can I just kill the laser bots and come back and keep killing them, will that count as 10? Any help would be grateful I am only a few points away from having all of them! more

Resolved Question: What happens when extremely morbidly obese people go to prison?

I'm talking only about the most extreme of cases, the sort where people can't leave their house without the use heavy machinery. Where their skin can literally tear if they so much as roll over in bed. Say a 900 pound person committed say, an Internet crime. I can only imagine the accommodations a prison would have to make would be extreme. Could their lifestyle be deemed as prison-like anyway and could house arrest be substituted? Are there any precedents for this sort of thing? more

Resolved Question: what if you and your family was denied your medical rights PART 3 10/31/08?

So, the baby's mother felt forced to follow(mind you she is on pain med's in need of medical herself I'm sure a bit dazed, but her symptom's weren't as bad. due to i believe pain med's) mother stated," that her head hurt and eye's burned" as I follow them to this other room demanding the whole time medical treatment or discharge immediatly somehow we get ushered into this other room on the other side of the building, and then abandoned and forced to make our body's recover on their own when it was their fault we were in this position in the first place! I'm in this room I don't want to be in. it's around 1:47am now I've beed fighting and arguing with them for help for over 15 minute's after immediate evacuation of this incident! :I'm trying to remember all details that I can: @ this point, we feel not only denied our rights to medical we feel borderline kidnapped! denied our right's to leave on our own free will!!! while needing medical treatment! as were in this room I'm in disbelief.. I feel like worse than that of a prisoner. it's been about 20 from exiting the death trap, at this point I feel what can I do to get help? why ain't they helping? why there's so much pressure in my chest? my eye's, nose and throat still burn but not as bad anymore scale1-10 @this point I would have to say about a"6"-"7" why ain't my baby getting help!? a bit dazed still, and wondering why they won't let us go or help us>? and still knowone could tell me what kinda fuel exhaust we were expose too.. so, I feel I really need to know this! a lil bit dizzy but starting to recover on my own I go down 10 floors and demand to know what kinda fuel was in there! and demand a report be wrote up so if my baby's lungs or brain is damaged then we know who's at fault! I found out it was diesel. went back upstairs, as soon as I came out the elevator and took a right that stuffy nose lady was there I was sent back up here to write to write the report! I asked whom do I make this report to as walking towards her she stated>: just go to your room they'll be in there in a minute" why you walking this way your rooms that way" and she pointed back down the hall @ this point this lady is about 2 sec's from a cold elbow. I stated "shut up! I'm dazed from your room. I was suppose to be sleeping you guys got me sick and won't help I know how to get to the room my family's in this way!" by this time there was no need to keep asking or demanding help or anything because it was not going to happen! I honestly after getting enough strengh back like knocking on or 2 of them out.. I stated to them all the next mother bleeeper that treats us rude and without respect is getting dropped and I don't give a hoot who it is!!! I'm pissed just give me a reason! just say one more rude remark!" wow! how fast ones attitude changes! they were finally talking to us with some respect. like we were not little kids anymore! basically the only treatment we received was another contaminated room!! the big heater was hanging on one side about to jump off the wall and hurt someone, the clock didn't work, and there was blood all over the tiolet and the sink. so, we couldn't use them!!! the blood was there 10hrs later at time of discharge(we took pic's on cell phone as we left) At this point I'm waiting in this roon to make a report that we didn't want to be in> I'm sitting on the bed still dazed holding my head up looking down facing the ground in great shock under high stress, and our baby just started to calm down! finally a floor supervisor came in and asked what would you like to do, I told them what happen and my symptoms are still there:: and she goes "I believe you" I was like you better not be getting smart!! because if you did you immediately would took us in for proper treatment! At this point I'm more mad and in shock from everything that's happened then feeling the symptoms I want to hurt someone so bad now!!! because of how they denied our rights and neglected our baby, and her parents. So, I just kept telling the it's too late it's too late! the damage has already been done! the damage has already been done! she to was trying to tell me that diesel exhaust was not that bad and I shouldn't worry:::I'm thinking first of all how are you gonna try and tell me that, I went just through it! and so did our baby! I tell her oh, no it is not ok, and not good! and I operated heavy machinery for a few years and know alot more about diesel exhaust than you and it is not good!!! she then stated" well I don't know that much about diesel" I said" well then why you claiming that you know? why are you all claiming that it's ok and not to worry!!!! she shut up and really didn't want to talk anymore and left the room! (I'm thinking how did this happen to us why? what did that baby do to deserve this? what did we do? a couple hours into this bad situation my chest was experiencing extreme pressure! although my eye's nose and throat are almost back to what they were prior to this inci more

Resolved Question: Could this answer the question "then why do so many people believe"?

Six blocks away from my house, they recently tore down a McDonald's. In its place they built... a McDonald's. On my bottle of Ambien, there are two additional labels taped side by side. The first says "This medication helps you to fall asleep". The second says "warning: may cause drowsiness". On my dog's bottle of medication, right beside the part of the label which says the prescription is for a dog, it says "do not operate motor vehicles or heavy machinery while under the influence of this medication". I have a stack of Duraflame logs, just in case the power goes out during a winter storm. In between a bright advertisement that says "easy to light firelog" and a large red arrow which says "light here", it says "caution: risk of fire". I could go on and on. There's a warning on my iron not to use it on clothes I'm currently wearing. On the back of my shampoo bottle there is both a set of instructions, and a hotline number I can call in case I still have questions about how to use my shampoo. I called my phone company about the fact my phone service was down, and was told to hang up and call back from the number in need of repair. I called another time because my internet service went out, and was told it was easily fixed. All I had to do was download the patch online. There are warnings at zoos telling people not to taunt dangerous animals... Could the answer to "then why do so many people believe" be "because a lot of people don't seem to have any common sense or think things through"?Eddie-- I could believe that about the McDonald's, except it looks exactly like the one they tore down. Mommy-- I seriously doubt you could "fix" me. Maybe you should start with something smaller, such as your ability to communicate. Bob-- I wasn't referring to any specific belief, just that question being used as a retort, and I like the following definition of common sense: "sound practical judgment that is independent of specialized knowledge, training, or the like".KAL-- Frighteningly, it isn't a single pre-printed label on a box. It's a prescription filled by a regular pharmacist who has to call the vet every time and confirm the prescription. I can't set up auto-refills myself because the pharmacy, which for the sake of not mentioning the name of I will call Ball-tweens, told me my dog has to authorize auto-refills himself. After complaining, someone even called from their corporate office to apologize for the mix up, and tell me all I had to do was have my pet (he actually used the word PET) call in or go online and set up an account, that way he can have his prescriptions refilled automatically and I wouldn't have to bother with it in the future. So it's only after I call in to let them know my dog needs a refill, they speak to my dog's vet, and then type K9 into the computer to have the label printed up, that the pharmacist affixes the second label to the bottle. more

Resolved Question: Do heavy metals like lead, mercury, and arsenic pull off in the washer, or contaminate the other clothes?

My father runs a rigging company, and as such he has daily, regular exposure to all three of these heavy metals. Lead he contacts from handling lead bricks to use as weights, arsenic from cutting pressurized wood for blocks to use in stabilizing machinery, and mercury everytime he incidentally breaks open a flourescent light bulb all over himself, while driving under one in a forklift. He then comes home, and without washing his hands, proceeds to touch and interact with the pets, use various doors and thereby contaminating the knobs and handles, eats a meal or so, etc. I've asked him to be more cleanly, but he refuses, citing he cannot be harmed by heavy metals or some other inordinate nonsense (his intellect is wilting, and his doctor even commented to the effect that it is surprising he can get by normally, after he failed basic battery tests, probably due to all the heavy metal bioaccumulation and repeated concussions he's accrued over the years). To compensate for the heavy metal contamination of everything in the household, I wash my hands after touching anything outside my room, and quarantine off any objects in my room that he has physical contact with. I also avoid the pets, since the metals are probably embedded in their fur. I am still concerned, however, about the heavy metals perhaps transferring off of his clothing, and onto mine. Do these substances get pulled off the fabric and rinsed out in the washer, leaving the clothes clean, or would any of the lead, arsenic, or mercury present on his clothing simply transfer onto my own laundry, contaminating them? Should I take up washing my clothes seperately, or would it not make any difference if they were still being washed in the same machine? What should I do in order to eliminate these routes of heavy metal exposure from my life? more

It's a little heavier than the other 'consoles' and the build quality really shows. It also has a lot more power in the processor because its Playstation, a Sony brand. Please post your opinions below, I'm looking forward to an exciting evening of playing Ratchet and Clank, Lair or Heavenly Sword on my home media entertainment system. more

Resolved Question: Question about arsenic content in wood, help please?

Until 2003, arsenic was applied to lumber to dispell termites. Today, someone was sawing through long, wooden blocks to create smaller blocks to use to stabilize and secure some heavy machinery. While they were doing this, I was seperated by a single wall, a door, and a couple of windows. Then later, I had to give that same individual a ride in my truck, wherein many of the wood chips clinging to their clothing abraded off and into the seat of my truck. I have no idea how old the wood was. Was arsenic ever even applied to such types of wood, or was that only for the lumber meant for decks and things? And if indeed any arsenic was applied to this wood, could I have had any exposure to it or breathed in it, as a result of the situations delineated above? more

Resolved Question: Anybody want to comment? Yea, I know it's long. I know that already. Thanks.?

call it by its name: murder oh political policy in a pig’s eye there’s no policy except the party they hid it so no one could see but i knew i knew the die is cast the bus ride the incessant indoctrination we jolted along past the collectives pinichov that pitiful stooge was dictating to us. imagine all the same old manure. i realized then for me there was no turning back farm after farm we passed while pinichov droned and around me blackness for i knew what no one else could know i suppose knowledge can be severe i closed my eyes and covered my face and wept i saw no farms but one, the litvinov’s yuri’s will was too strong yuri was only a poor farmer but he was the true patriot mrs. litvinov had found him his skull crushed and his blood spilt from the house to the center of the yard where he lay in a puddle of black his blood was black it was the soil yuri had fought for he knew no ideology and he lay until they were sure that she would find him and how do i know? yes you ask God save my soul i am privy to such things but they had not had enough they would use yuri as an example and they brought mrs. litvinov to stand trial as you recall my father occasionally did a curious thing he opened a file for me to see he’d ask me what i thought of it what i’d do if i were he if i had his authority. i read of yuri: he was a traitor to the party and russia condemned for trading in the black market trading in contraband at the expense of the common people those who sacrificed for the collectives then the litvinovs were exposed as jews that file was routine kgb - my hands shook following death by unnatural causes – unnatural indeed – an accident, yuri had fallen while patching a leak in his roof following the heavy snows, he had been drinking and lost his balance. i looked at father sensing that somehow he was reaching out to me and had no words to express himself i said papa why is it good men fall? they fall from roofs they fall from positions of authority they disappear and never return to their families? papa yuri did not fall did he? and father said no yevi your good friend and mine did not fall from the roof and i said papa it was the hooligans, murderous thugs what does a life mean to them? but father said it is more than that much more and i said papa it’s the party boss – and demansk is a stalinist stronghold – yerchenko he is the leading proponent of the old brutality and father said he wields the power he’s corrupt he’s blind and arrogant and dangerous but it is more than just yerchenko and i said papa the farm policy is unbending uncompromising dictating from the top and so it rises, yes? and he said yes and i said without consideration of individual lives we are spoon-fed force-fed the line and father said yes … but and i exclaimed papa how far does it go? it is men in power – you have seen it they are jaded and lost and we are floundering in an intricate web papa looked at me and spoke as never before yes yevi my son all these things are true and i continued and i pressed him how far does it go? i ceased and he fell back silent in his chair the life seemed to drain from his body and he touched me in a way i have never felt before a man so cold and aloof and driven so many years a man i barely knew and now suddenly unmasked it was like an introduction and i spoke softly and asked papa why? but then i knew it was of the moment that for which he had had no words it is them and us - all of us them and you and me and his eyes were moist but steady if you only knew him as i then knew him i cannot say how proud i was a moment of ecstasy amidst the ache of ages and the buses rolled along on farm day pinichov had been chosen for his charisma not necessarily his subtlety his devotion and obedience, less his tact one of the pet dogs, his eyes would gleam with his zeal for his purpose don’t lose sight of the dollar he would say while stooping to pick up the penny and he spoke of ages and lives and histories meanings, unquestioning not knowing any other way he was one of the many cogs in the machinery essentially as guilty and innocent as I as i sat seeing the litvinov tragedy one tiny speck in an ocean of tangled nets i cringed and clutched my hands together the blood yuri’s blood was black upon my hands dried clotted black. no more if it is within my power i made a private statement I pronounced the words and set the die it is wrong but there it is as papa had said and as he said it he looked deeply into my eyes he seemed to be saying that once he had taken his stand and he would live with it he was what there was but i still had a chance he seemed to say that i was the more the time he did not have all this spoken though no words passed between us i felt all this and more we sat huddled close to the fire in the hearth and a sudden downdraft blew the ashes in our faces brushing at them lightly paled papa’s skin and from my father’s place a ghost arose to speak where life is gray and frail as the ghost re-entered his body papa’s vision sharpened and he became the man of steel once again just as I was thinking all these things his eye pealed away my disguises and the blood rushed to my face then he rose and kissed me and said be true to yevi and to Russia my son wherever that may lead you more

Resolved Question: Does my employer Need to do a risk assessment?

I have just found out I'm about 6wk preg, i told my supervisor, as in my last job (cleaning) when i fell preg with no.2 they did a risk assesment and there was lots of things i wasnt aloud to do, ie buffing or using other heavy machinery, this job is the same type of work, but she started off telling me she didn't have to do a risk assesment, then went back on it and said, she couldnt do one because i wanted it kept quiet (early days and all that) Does any one know if this is right? Do all employers have different procedures or is there a set of guidelines that everyone must follow? Also when i said to her i wasnt aloud to use the machinery last time round, she told me she would expect me to try it and see how i get on, she would assess things depending how far on i am and the work i am doing?? I felt that was a bit harsh, cos what if the time i try the machine, to see how i get on is the time my baby gets hurt, or myself for that matter. Am i being a bit too cautious? more

Resolved Question: Gaming laptop for college, or too heavy or too weak?

I am looking for a gaming laptop to take with me to college, and will hopefully spend around $4000- I've been saving up my entire life. Now, my old zv6000 was 13pounds, so I'm used to heavy machinery. But what is a good gaming laptop that isn't too heavy (the sager SLI notebook is 17lbs), OK on battery life on power save mode, portable, and powerful? I have my sights currently set on the new 7 lb alienware with the 8800M and illuminated keyboard, but maybe I'm wrong. more

Resolved Question: Like Ferraris?

Imagine you are tooling around town in your Ferrari. It’s your third car. You mostly take it out for Sunday drives. You are crossing some train tracks and the car dies. A train is coming towards you. You notice a switch that will send the train down another track. But seated on the other track is a house filled with starving African refugees. If you throw the switch the refugees will all, die. What do you do?? I would hope you let the train hit the car. But here is the rub. By choosing to buy the car and not using the money to make the world a better place are you not in effect killing the refugees anyway? I have sent this story to hundreds of people. The response is almost always the same. Actually the most common response is nothing. But those who do respond usually say I work hard, etcetera, etcetera, I deserve, etcetera, etcetera. But if you own 3 Ferraris, or even one for that matter, it is as much about luck as it is about deserving. If your are Shaquille Oneal and you were lucky enough to get the genes you got you are just as lucky as the child born to poverty and oppression is unlucky. There is no harder work NO harder life than imposed poverty and NO ONE deserves that life. Let’s look at it a different way. How much does that 5th Hummer increase the quality of your life? How much more happy are you with that car than you would be with out it? The difference is marginal at best. You probably would not even notice the difference if it was not in the garage. But you do have a 5 car garage and have to keep it filled. How much does it cost to fix a hair lip on a poor little girl in Bolivia, maybe $ 5,000? So instead of spending $ 50,000 on that car and making your life a tiny bit better, why not make 10 lives infinitely better? I was having lunch with a friend and before we went to lunch we popped into a jewelry store. She has a friend who makes jewelry and she wanted to show it to me. We were looking and I recognized a belt that my friend wears. I asked how much for the belt. The salesperson said $ 5,000. My friend has a $ 5,000 belt!!! So while we were having lunch I asked my friend how much different her life would be if she did not have the belt. “Not much” she said. Then I asked. “If your granddaughter had a hair lip and you had to sell the belt to fix it what would you do.” She said, “Well I would just take the money out of the bank.” I pointed out that this was all fantasy/hypothesis and that we have to assume that selling the belt is the only way to repair her grand daughter’s hair lip. Then she said. “Of course I would sell the belt, she’s family.” I said. “We are all family. All of us are one family, one human race. It is about compassion knowing that when you buy something extravagant and wasteful you are stealing bread from a starving child. I know it’s hard because we live in an extravagant country. But you have to know this grand and lavish American way of life is one of the main reasons why the rest of the world hates us. And, why they hijack airplanes and crash them into our sky scrapers.” She said, “Well what am I supposed to do?” I wrote this down on a piece of paper and handed it to her. “Live simply so that others may simply live.” A couple of days later I was thinking about a singer I saw once. His name was T-Buck. He was talking between songs and he said. “You know we worship all kinds of things, money, Jesus, cars, Buddha, Allah, but more than any of those things we should worship each other.” I recently went to the Philippines. It’s amazing what the internet can do. I googled Philippine surf camp, and a week later I was stepping off of a twin propeller, 12 seat airplane onto tiny island in the middle of nowhere, PI. This island is so remote that they can not get many types of heavy machinery there, so they can not make gravel with machines. Instead they use people. The human gravel makers squat on their heels, with hammers and chisels, and break up rocks. They do it 8 hours a day, 6 days a week, with no safety glasses, no protection on their hands, for 25 cents an hour, $ 2 a day. Even though I was half way around the world, on the very cusp of civilization The Catholic Church was everywhere. One evening began with the sound of church bells ringing, and a bit later I could hear the choir too. Then a few hours later a small stream of people trickled into the neighbors place, maybe 20 in all. They ate dinner and then began to sing and pray. As they were singing I was thinking about T-Buck. It suddenly occurred to me that more than anything the world needs “The Church of Each Other”. So I say that if you have 100 pairs of shoes, $ 10,000 watches, 5 ferraris, etc., you are worshiping yourself, and you lack a certain type of compassion or maybe you just are just conveniently not paying attention. I am not advocating life in a tent. I am just saying to make conscious choices, and don’t be frivolous, and wasteful. You can still have a nice house, a nice car, etc., but just THINK. That’s all just THINK, and be aware that we all are one. And whatever you take for yourself that is more than you what NEED you are taking from someone else. I would like to close with a quote from Bill Maher. Women think about diamonds the way men think about sex, the way leeches think about blood," Bill Maher once remarked. "But diamonds have a lot of blood on them, even without the terrorist connection, because they can not be traced diamonds are used by terrorists, to launder and move money. Diamond mines in Africa are controlled by rebel armies, and the rebel armies control the territory and make the villagers mine the diamonds. The villagers are basically slaves and the Rebels control them through terror, through such lovely things as cutting off the arms of the little children - something you never see in the De Beers commercials. An amputation is forever. Now, I told this to a woman recently, who was only about the nicest person I've ever met - but she is a woman. And I told her about Africa and the armies and the rebels and the terror and the cutting off the arms of the little children. And she looked up at me with a little sad face and said, Both arms? Remember Beannie Babies??? Diamonds are pretty much the same thing. I used to be in the jewelry business. Jewelry is what is called a created market. The market is driven by perceived value. What that means is that really good marketers make really good ads and they make us gullible consumers think that diamonds, beanie babies, whatever are rare, valuable, and worth a lot of money. Diamonds are a dime a dozen, it just so happens that most of them come from Africa and not that many people mine them. SO, the diamond miners got together about 100 years ago and decided to limit the supply and they did a really great job of marketing. They used to pay MILLIONS of dollars to make movies with big movie stars just so they could have a scene where the Brad Pitt of the day would ask the Angelina Jollie of the day to marry her and he would give her a diamond ring. So now in today’s times Diamonds are Forever, Every Kiss Begins with Kay, and on and on. They do a GREAT JOB!!!! Those are great ads!!!! Have you noticed that the folks who run the Diamonds are Forever ads are the De Beers family. Those are the folks who mine the diamonds. They don’t care where you buy the diamonds, just as long as you buy them. So anyone reading this ever pay over $ 50 for a beanie baby??? Feel kind of silly? Maybe in a 100 years or so people will look back and say, those silly 20th century people used to pay large amount of money for bags of beans and shiny rocks. And by the way those diamond miners, the De Beers and their friends are the same folks who brought us one hundred years of Apartheid and complete racial domination in South Africa. 100 years of white folks KICKING BLACK ASS!!! I am serious, in the last 20 years literally Millions of people in countries like the Congo have been killed in power struggles over diamonds. Anyway that’s about it Looking forward to the responses!!! more

Resolved Question: UK Law on damage to equipment?

I work for a UK mine. We use heavy machinery underground and the work area is full of sharp rocks. When we blast, rocks are blown down the tunnels. Last week we had one of our air hoses cut by (presumably) a sharp rock. We repaired the hose with a joining clamp, but have been informed that we will have £140 deducted from our bonuses - the cost of a new hose. This was not deliberate or malicious, it just happened. We have also been told that if we wear out the tyres "too fast" on our scoop trams we will have the cost of new tyres deducted from our bonuses - at £650.00 per tyre! We do a hard job in a harsh environment, and I believe that they cannot deduct the cost of "damage" to equipment if the damage was not deliberate or malicious - negligent I'm not too sure about. They could say that we didn't take adequate steps to put the hose out of the way of flying rocks ... Can anyone let me know the relevant law so I can argue the point. Thank You. Robin more

Estimate using own experience the maximum rate of deceleration of a person running at top speed coming to rest 3. A flatbed is carrying 2300kg crate of heavy machinery. If static friction between the crate and the bed of the truck is 0.55 what is the maximum rate at which the truck driver can decilerate when coming to a stop in order to keep the crate from sliding forward Explain answer 2 and 3 in a way i can draw a free body diagram. thanks for the help! more

Resolved Question: Water or Paper?

In Asian countries people traditionally use water after ablution rather than paper. I find that water leaves you much cleaner than paper! Besides, paper is made from trees. The jungle of Borneo is cut down, and fast growing acacia are planted which in turn spoil the regional biochemistry of the soil. The trees are cut down with heavy machinery, fossil fuels are used to send them to countries where environmental concerns are not yet an issue, and transformed with chemical agents into bleached paper which is shipped back to Malaysia where it is sold at formidable prices to unsuspecting consumers who flush it down the toilet. OK, water treatment is not without its negative side effects on the environment but those are negligible when compared to the entire machinery of the paper manufacturing industry. When you want to do something for your environment do you have trains of thought like this, too? What is your contribution to environmental conservation, water or paper?---- uh, Lazaus won't be invited for dinner at my place...--- seems that we are divided when it comes to environmental issues... let t come, I give you another couple of hours! more

Resolved Question: How much CO/2 is generated by weight for various activities?

I am a straw bail builder in Colorado. I am working on my own home and doing a lot of things by hand... rather than using power equipment and heavy machinery. Examples are digging by hand, cutting by hand, mixing natural clay plasters by hand ect. My goal is to build homes with a lower carbon foot print than the total weight of the structure. The weight of the materials used is easy, the savings are hard to calculate. 1) How much CO/2 does a human produce per day? 2) How much CO/2 is created per gallon of gas burned. 3) How much CO/2 is created in making gas? 4) What is the carbon foot print of running an electric saw for an hour? 5) What is the carbon foot print of running a compressor for a day to use a nail gun vs a hammer? These are just basic questions, to be honest and accurate I will need help with latent energy in all kinds of things... even the footprint of planting, growing and harvesting the grain crop that my straw bails originate from. more

Resolved Question: I have invented two new tire concepts, but I'm not sure how to develop and sell these ideas. Any advice?

I am a graduating in Dec. '07 from EKU with a BFA in graphic design. My final senior project is about using graphic design as a vehicle for invention. I have come up with some new tire concepts that I wish to further develop and eventually sell. I have tried contacting numerous tire manufacturers but receive no reply. One of my designs is for a tire for passenger vehicles (cars, trucks, van, etc.) that would (in theory) provide far greater safety, handling, and overall tread life than conventional tires. The other concept is for a heavy industrial tire system that could be used for heavy machinery and military applications. This tire is (in theory) would be virtually indestructable, and would provide superior traction and ride quality in even the most extreme of environments. Although I have been study tires for sometime, I still need more information on how I can get these ideas off the ground. Any help given would be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Pre-Employmeny Drug Testing Policy in Virginia?

Will I be subject to a pre-employment drug test if: 1) I have received a job offer from a small private firm in Virginia. I have received an offer letter as well as an employment agreement. There is no mention of any drug test etc in either document. 2) Can they test me on the first day of work? 3) Do I have to sign something that explicitly states their drug testing policy before they can ask me to take a test? 4) How can I ask them about their drug testing policy without sounding like I am a user and therefore jeopardizing their perception of me? note: Please do not answer to preach to me about the merits of being drug free. I have scored a near perfect score on advanced level standardized tests "under the influence" of marijuana and since this is an academic job (and does not entail operation of heavy machinery), my use will not limit me at all. I enjoy it and I feel that drug testing is a gross invasion of privacy. ThanksTo: m1a1mikegolf ....Thanks for the first part of your response. As for the second part: I do not need a lesson in imposing one's morality on anyone else. It is quite evident that you get your jollies from judging people on Yahoo. My maturity levels are my own affair and I am well aware of myself. Please answer the question asked otherwise do not waste my time. more
