Resolved Question: I have asked my land lord to repair something... and he has said and I quote "Its a luxury."?
Following up from a previous quesiton: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ArX2pcooTovD2mjBbCJlgTgazKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20081116174925AAge4jB I asked him to repair the ceiling fan because it has started to make a high pitch noise, like a generator makes when it is not lubricated right. He told me that it was a luxury, a perk of the room and that I should turn off the fan and get used to living without it. Now. Under the California Tenants Guide : http://www.dca.ca.gov/publications/landlordbook/problems.shtml#landlordresponsible There is this following quote: An electric system, including lighting, wiring, and equipment, in good working order. I am at a loss here. What should I do?1st. Do not quote to me what was lost in the fires. You have no clue as to what I have been through or where my life has gone. 2nd. Do Not answer with derogatory remarks about me or my personality. You do not know the situation. You are reading a small tip of what is going on. 3rd. I want advice not belittling comments. I already get enough of those from my landlord. moreResolved Question: I have a DIY challenge for all my DIY friends.?
I am a journeyman electrician. I have had this idea for some time now that I think I could make happen, but unfortunately I do not have the funds to even attempt it. So I would like to see if any of you can afford to give it a shot and let me know how it goes. Heres my idea. I want to build a self powered generator. I have thought about this for quite a while now and I can for no reason see why it won't work. If the generator is initially started with a gas or electric motor and then once started is cluthed out and is then sustained by an electric motor powered by the generator itself. I do understand that a generator cannot make enough power to run itself but through the use of step up and step down tranformers this can be accomplished. After all this is basically what the utility companys do everyday. The use of a low amperage motor and through the use of gear reduction I think this can truly be done and quite possibly be a million dollar idea as home and business owners could basically make their own electricity and therefore do away with these rediculously high energy bills. Any ideas? I would love for someone with the knowledge attempt to do this for me, I just want to know if it can be done or not. moreResolved Question: A Honda generator is fitted next to the engine in my Swift Kontiki motor home.Anyone know what it does?
The generator has a pull start and runs on petrol. There is a plug with a lead running from the side but do'nt know where it goes!I wondered whether it runs/charges the 2 batteries(engine & leisure)when the vehicle is'nt hooked up to an electric supply. many thanks leyllani moreResolved Question: Large enough generator?
Our power went out due to wind damage from hurricane Ike, in Pennsylvania. We have not had power for 4 days now, but luckily I was able to get a generator and have saved our fridge and freezer. My question is what can I power with this generator. It is a 5000 watt generator, and I was told that this should be able to power the whole house. Only thing is, I have a lot to run in my house. We have well water, heat with an electric heat pump, which has electric back up heat, and also an electric hot water heater. The well pump has a double pole 20 amp breaker, hot water double pole 30 amp breaker, heat pump double pole 25 amp, and furnace double pole 60 amp and double pole 30 amp. Will the 5000 watt generator be able to power any one of these at a given time? I know I am SOL for using them all at once, but switching between them would not be a big deal to me. Also, I know that I should not back feed into my house, and plan on getting a manual transfer switch to do the job. I just need to know if I need to get a bigger generator before I start looking at transfer switches. Thanks for the help. moreResolved Question: No electric power from gas generator?
My DeVilbiss 6000 watt generator will start but, no electric power from the receptacle. Only used a few times and it sits most of the time. Any suggestions? Thanks Geo moreResolved Question: Can you tell me possible skin problems when using solder?
I have a skin problem on the first two fingers, on each hand and both thumbs, which I used, to put together wire brushes for electric motors and generators at a brush manufacturer. I used liquid-blue flux to wet the wire and put caps on wires, with my hands. Doctors say it is Eczema. I question, as, it doesn't itch, but seems to blister with a dry scaly surface, after it has become calloused and numb. Then it peels off and causes sore places on my fingers and thumbs. It, then, heals up and starts all over again. I never was told to use gloves, when using this flux.I used to work with this, but no longer work there. What can I do for the affected skin. This was in 1996 and 97 that I worked with this stuff. Everyone that worked there did the same thing, so i thought nothing about it. The skin keeps doing this, shall I ask a specialist to look at this and what type of specialist would that be. The Dermatologist was the one that told me it was only Eczema. Thanks for your help. I will take you up on the suggestion. It does seem to go away for a short time when I get a prednizone burst perscription, but do not want to take that constantly, as I already have a weight problem, don't need a bigger one. Thankyou again. moreResolved Question: Turning on electric for contractor?
I have just closed on a house and getting ready to start rehab, do I have to get the power turned on, or can my contractors do all work by generatorThanks Mike S, for the response, however, I should pay him to use my electricity, and pay him outrageous labor fees...C'mom manAnd the rehab is scheduled for 4 months...So I am to carry my electric bill at my house that I live in and another house that is not habitable? Also Mike S, I have a signed contract with them stating that the rehab has to be done in 4 months. moreResolved Question: Why do candidate only offer murky, weak old ideas to attack our energy crisis?
Have they any idea what to do? Lets drill. Lets put up the wind mills, built the first state owned refinery, incentives for millions of electric cars, shale oil could be constructed, jobs, jobs, start building the nuclear generators, hammer down on the unnecessary airline business and boost more trains and small 80 mpg cars. I have a Coleman Vantage 8K watt generator w/18hp B&S electric start engine, that will start-up but won't keep running. I've determined that it's getting air and spark and getting fuel from the tank to past the inline filter. It won't start w/o choke and then will fire right away when choke is applied but dies within a second or two whether you turn the choke off or not. This generator was left behind from the previous owner's of the house and has sat for over 2 years w/o fuel in it or w/o being started. I have filled with fresh fuel, checked the oil level and condition, wired to use pick-up battery to start, and cleaned air filter. This generator is used for back-up power to my home and temporary power in my barn and is mounted in the bed of an old p/u that I use on the ranch. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated...... moreResolved Question: What is this he added to the A/C?
I own a home that uses a heat pump. House totally electric. Well this past January the A/C went out so we had no heat. Not that big of a deal cause it's still pretty warm were I live. A good pair of sweats and small heater worked fine. My husband does Heating and Air for a living. He loves COLD AIR!! Like Artic cold! Well didn't think much of it when he said the A/C went out cause it is an old unit and needs to be replaces. Well he checked on a new unit since the temps are getting hotter and got some good prices. But today he decides to FIX the old one? HUH? I thought he said it was done in back in January! Well he said he put some box or something on it and that works like a generator to kick start it so it comes on. This thing puts out more power or something. I asked him if it was going to pull more electricity in order to kick start it like he said and of course he says no! Asking him was a stupid thing on my part seeing that he loves 30 below temps!Anyone know what this is? moreResolved Question: I want to buy an Electric Power Generator and im not 100% sure how they work.?
I want to buy an electric power generator but the only ones i found required gasoline. is there any generator that starts off charged and keeps itself charged? if so where could i buy one? also i need about 5000+ watts, im planning on using this for a room with a bunch of electronics. i probably need more than one. i dont care how much they are. please help me find this, i cant find it anywhere. (also if there isnt just a regular generator that doesnt require anything, what are the alternatives? i just need something that is an alternative to plugging it in the wall. solar power, generator, windmill, anything. please help me) thank you :)ok sooo theres a way to use a windmill anndd solar panels and possibly get around 5000 watts? i need some links to this stuff because i have no idea what to look for. thanks for the responses btw :) moreResolved Question: y do electric generators have to workd harder when we increase the load?
see..what my understanding is that electricity is generated when we rotate the dynamo mechanically. since increasing the electric load doesn't add any weight to the dynamo then y is that the generator start choking..... moreResolved Question: Electric powered car with small generator converted to act as an alternator? Gas going to be $7/gal by 2012???
4 independent electro-magnetic motors (similiar to Remote control car motors) hooked up to a bank of batteries. The wheels/ i.e.m.m.s have pulleys (like on gasoline motors) which are connected by belts to alternators that recharge the battery cells while the vehicle is in motion. all the batteries are thin li-ion batteries that are slim so that they can fit in the chassis/body beneath the passenger compartment. the brake system is electro-magnetic using electrical pulses to slow and bring the vehicle to a stop. Down the center of the vehicle an independent cell of batteries and/or heavy duty capacitors to power the various other important electronics (headlights, taillights, etc.). there can be other pulleys in place for fans, hvac systems, so on. Acceleration can be controlled by transformers and switches linked to the accelerator pedal. Obviously for larger vehicles and more hauling power the motors are going to have to be modified but here is a start. moreVoting Question: 3 phase generator 208v 6.5kw with hertz trouble?
This is a Kohler 6500W generotor 3 ph 208/120 output auto start NG. Very old model. The other day when I tested it, The Microwave oven did not operate right. I tested the voltage it was at 122V. The hertz were very high. I disconected the house load and proceded to test. No load- two legs (leg A to C) hertz high (leg A to B) hertz 50 to 90 all over the place (leg C to B) hertz 50 to 90 all over the place (All legs to neutral) all over the place I then connected a load of 15 amps 1 three phase motor 3HP and 3 resistive heaters (electric stove large burners) Adjusted the speed of the motor to 58-60 hertz from leg to leg voltage is good. That B leg still has fluxuation. All legs to neutral have fluxuation. Generator is 208 delta with transformer in gen panel for 208/120Y Does anyone have a idea for a fix on the hertz I am an electricion 26yrs moreResolved Question: I have a Homelite LR5500 generator with a B&S engine. I have an electric generator transfer switch box in my garage. When we hooked up a generator only 2 of the 5 switches work. It's connected to a 3000 W generator and I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting. The switches have power coming through because when switched to LINE they work fine, when off - I guess they are off; when switched to GEN only 2 work as I said. Do I need an electrician or is this something I can check myself?Oh, sorry..it's a 5000 W generator. It's not meant to run the entire house - just vital appliances and provide some electricity. But, according to the papers that came with the generator - we can run most of our major appliances, TV's. My main concern is who needs to repair/maintenance the generator BOX that's been installed. moreResolved Question: Where can I find a chep 1/3 HP engine--used is great--for a science project?

Our Starting motor have 110 KW, 400v and our generator is of 2000KVA. we recommend for starting of electric motor VFD but contractor insist to use Star Delta. please advice moreResolved Question: The principle of DFIG (induction generator double-fed)? How does it start?
In the DFIG (induction generator double-fed), stator directly connected to the grid and rotor also connected to grid via AC-DC-AC. At below synchronous speed, the converter operated as "inverter", current flow from grid---> converter---> rotor while stator directly connected to the grid. My question is: "At the first time, where does DFIG receive electric enery from? (from grid(stator) or from converter) "wmkl99 say exactly: DFIG only use for large wind turbines. But in my limited knowledge, DFIG always as a generator even wind speed under or above synch speed. And rotor will be closed firstly, it consume reactive power through AC-DC-AC converter to magnetize circuit. After it generated power, operater will connect stator to grid. This is my idea. Hello, Does anyone know where I can find a 12 Volt system (perhaps universal), to throw on my quad that doesn't have a battery, but runs off a generator for the lights. At least I think it does, kind of new to quads but not to mechanical stuff. Basically, I want to copy the design in a DIY version for my 90 suzuki lt230, which has no electric start, or lights, etc... I plan to make a watertight battery box, and I'd like a rear LED light along with some LED white fog lights for the front. Also, does anyone know of a switch for the brake, so that the light goes brighter when you brake, or could be a switch which turns another light on for the brake. I guess it would have to connect to the front and rear brake. Is there a way to make this bike electric start? A kit, or could i steal parts from one that does have electric start? Can the generator be used to charge the battery like an alternator? Thanks All! moreResolved Question: Problem with an 8 HP Briggs & Stratton engine???
This is an older electric generator. It starts easily and ran for about an hour; then just QUIT. It started easily, had to be choked, even though it was hot engine; ran for 5 minutes and died. I want to sell it; but can't, in good conscience, if it doesn't work right. Would someone advise me about what could be wrong with it? Someone at the coffee shop said I could have a 'valve problem'; and I don't have a clue about what that means. I have replaced: spark plug, gas lines, gas filter and rebuilt the carb. Thanks in advance for your help. And Merry Christ Mass one and all. BillThis has a "Magnatron" ignition; so, it must be gas flow. Thanks to all who have, thus far, replied. Does anyone know about a 'valve problem' that would cause this? moreResolved Question: Is blood an energy conductor to be able to eletrocute someone with it?
Like in that Dethklok song "Bloodrocuted" talks about eletrocuting someone in a pool of blood. Here are the lyrics. You've been targeted in the night by violent mercenaries. Your identity's been confused with one that looks like you You're a simple man living life. You are an electrician. But there's a bounty on your head A billion unmarked travelers checks. RUN Find your way deep into the woods. The dogs can smell your path. Try to find a way out of this. There seems to be no chance. Bounty hunters closer to you. Start to remember back. When you studied biology back in your high school class. Wait now, what did they say about the human body and proportions of things? Blood is an energy conductor. I am full of that all I need is an outlet. They're getting closer but now you have a plan. Lead them to the generator where there's solid land. The concrete floor will do just fine and electric outlets. Open up your veins and splash the blood and hit the power lines. Bloodrocuted Bloodrocuted You'll be bloodrocuted You'll be bloodrocuted You'll be bloodrocuted right now Enemies stand dead in your blood. The stench of cooking skin. All of them with their hair on end Their eyes exploded in. You stand with your arms bleeding still You cannot stop the flow. Though you are the victor tonight your time has come to go. go go go go go go Your time has come to go go go go go go go Your time has come to go Wait now, what did they say about the human body and proportions of things? Blood is an energy conductor. I am full of that all I need is an outlet. moreVoting Question: Is a gas-less car in the future...Are gas fueled cars the result of oil interests and the public be "damned"?
In the days following the world premiere of the FCX Clarity at the LA Auto Show, Honda invited a select group of journalists to drive a pair of pre-production examples in Santa Monica. As pre-production samples, these two cars are essentially hand built but using production tooling. Some reports have the value of these cars as much as $10,000,000 which may or may not be accurate for the current stage of development. Before we got to hop into the cars, some of the chief engineers and designers on the FCX program gave us a briefing on technical and design details. The soft-spoken VP of Honda of America R&D, Ben Knight, started things off with some background on the company's efforts in developing more efficient, less polluting technologies such as the CVCC engines of the 1970s and the EV-Plus battery electric of the late '90s and on to the fuel cell and diesel power-trains under development today. Knight may be soft-spoken, but like GM's Larry Burns, he is very much a hands-on engineer with a passion for developing new technology. While facilities for retail distribution of hydrogen are obviously extremely limited right now, Honda is actively working to change that too. Honda Soltec recently started production of new photo-voltaic cells that only require half the energy input to manufacture of current cells. Their Torrance, CA headquarters campus has a hydrogen filling station that features two different H2 generators. A solar powered electrolyzer produces the gas from water, while the experimental Home Energy Station has a natural gas reformer. With the most common way of producing hydrogen right new is steam reformation of natural gas, CO2 emissions still remain a concern. However, when well-to-wheels CO2 emissions are evaluated in comparison to gasoline engines, steam reformation and fuel cells show a sixty percent reduction. For solar powered electrolysis, Honda has proton exchange membrane electrolyzer that basically functions as a fuel cell in reverse and is eighty percent efficient. Although home hydrogen generation is still a ways off, centrally produced hydrogen is being distributed via pipelines right now. Shell will open be opening a hydrogen station in Los Angeles next year right on an existing 8" hydrogen pipeline. moreResolved Question: ENVIRONMENT: How would you get something important implemented to benefit the environment...such as:?
I'm a truck driver, and we pollute more than ANY other motorvehicle on the planet, but I know how to reduce that: Put in a small gas generator to produce electricity and heat/AC while we're idling. But how do I get someone to ACT on this idea? New York has an EPA law that says no truck can idle for more than 10 minutes - this law is largely ignored as most of the time truckers need AC or HEAT or electricity for SOMETHING! BUT, if the state of New York made a law that starting 2010, no truck could enter the state without an auxiliary power unit like I described, the emissions would be MUCH lower!!! Hybrid electric versions of trucks didn't work - not enough torque. But HOW DO I GET THIS IMPLEMENTED?! Who has the power? Who would care enough? Who do I write to? Who will get things done? PLEASE STAR THIS QUESTION!!!! And what ELSE can we do?I don't have the funds or the knowledge for a prototype. However, it's common sense that a lawn-mower would have less emissions than an large Peterbuilt Diesel engine. moreResolved Question: 'Question #3. I'm in the process of building my first wind turbine and was curious if running it without a load (ie. battery bank) would be harmful to the generators? I'm using a 260VDC 5A permanent magnet treadmill motor as the generator. I'm about ready to put up my tower and wasn't sure if I can go ahead and get it all assembled and put up and then add the battery bank as soon as I can get the batteries. This way I could also see how well it's going to perform on the tower. It's a 60' lattice tower and will be hinged at the bottom but still will be a bit of a pain to lower and raise a lot. I'm really excited about getting this up and running but don't want to damage anything before I even get started. Also I've heard of people using old electric baseboard heaters as a load dump when the bank gets fully charged. I'm having some trouble locating any of these around here and was wondering if anyone would have any other suggestions on something I could use as a dump? Thanks for all your time. moreResolved Question: Generator gas/electric start?

I own a Audi 100GL 1974 (swedish sold) Inside the car the red electric malfunction warning lamp was on even though I haven't even inserted the key. Turning the key into "all-on" mode (the mode just before starting the engine) made the red light go away but (as usual) turn the oil pressure warning lamp on. Yesterday, I drove the car a short route (2x5-6 minute trip) in wet weather which caused the generator/alternator belt to whine at times.Even though this might have caused the battery to be used during drive rather than the generator, still the red warning light shouldn't be on when the key isn't even inserted. All fuses are OK. Couldn't find any obvious short-circuits. Battery water levels are OK. Turning indicators work, radio works, the start engine tries to rev when I turn the key but there is just not enough power left in the battery. All tips on what to check, what might be wrong, etc is greatly appreciated. moreResolved Question: Can you use a generator to power a golf cart. Transformer the gen to DC and be able to drive the golf cart?
I would like to know if we can hook up a generator to a golfcart, or even a electric car and power it to drive. What I mean is start the gen, plug in the car(t) and away we go. I wanted to know if it can be done and if so what size gen can one use. I know that there are some inverters/transformers that will act as a UPS and have dips that can be set to do so, but what size gen would be needed to run it. If I can use a cart to go to the store, and there are no (in-put) electrical outlets to charge up can I use a gen to get me down the road when the batteris a flat? moreResolved Question: would you you please advise me in electrical engineering?and provide me some books/documents/calculation way?

1. A 15.0-Ω resistor is connected in series with two 10.0-Ω resistors in parallel and a 120-V generator. What is the voltage drop across the 15.0-Ω resistor? The problem is that I think I use Ohm's Law, but I only know resistance, which is given in the problem. How do I find the voltage drop? 2. The following appliances are all connected in parallel in one of the lines in the electrical system of a house: a 15-Ω electric frying pan, a 25-Ω refrigerator, a 20-Ω heater, and a 12-Ω toaster. The fuse in this line melts at 28 A. Will this arrangement of appliances causes the fuse to melt? Why or why not? I started this problem by finding the total resistance in a parallel circuit, and found it to be around 0.24-Ω. The problem is that I do not know how to take the next step. What should be done next? Thank you! moreResolved Question: Can continuous generation occur?
I love asking this question at work: You have a rig in front of you, an electric motor coupled to a generator of the same wattage. You also have an additional motor with a battery for a kinetic start. The generator is wired to the coupled electric motor. After a kinetic start from the 2nd motor it is removed and the generator and coupled motor are running. Is the generator producing enough power to run the motor that turns it, and will this unit continue to run? moreResolved Question: Existing Green cars, Does anyone have experience with the FEV-320AS?
I have been researching the Green activities in Peach Tree City in Georgia. Apparently a company named First Electric Vehicles has an electric vehicle product (listed below). I ask, does anyone have experience with this company or vehicle? http://www.fevehicle.com/services.html FEV-320AS, 4 passenger seats. no gas, the speed can up to 55ml/90km per hr. one charge range 115 ml/180 km, $1.00 cost on the electricity. Price(starts from): $7,800.00 FEV-320AS Plus, 4 passenger seats. a generator adds to FEV-320AS, first 85ml/140km is electricity, it performs the same of the FEV-320AS, after this range it work likes a hybrid vehicle with electricity and gasoline. moreResolved Question: I have radiant floor heating. Without power, will my pipes freeze in the basement with no heat available?
My house was built 3 years ago with radiant floor heating in my basement which is living quarters. In the event of a power outage during a winter storm, my heating system would not run. What I need is ball park figure of the time that it would take to start freezing the water lines that are constructed within the cement slab floor. A brief outage obviously would be no problem. Lets say that at 10 F. the ice covered electric lines took 12 hours to get up and running. Probably, still cool. But at what length of time should I seriously consider going into debt for a generator? I'd rather buy a new genny than replace a radiant heating system. Or some Kerosone heaters to put on basement floor? We can survive without electric and provide some heat for the house for a few days but what would the danger be the the floor pipes freezing up because the water is not flowing. I have two non-electric heating devices for a 44x28 house, furnished basement & main floor. How prepared do I need to be? moreResolved Question: Electric generator powerd by an electric motor?
I've always wondered if this has ever been tried. If I only had the money to get the parts needed I think it would be a fun to try although I bet you folks will tell me right off the bat that it's a matter of watts output or something I'm overlooking. My idea is to jump start a generator with a gas powered motor or battery pack and use an electric motor to turn a generator motor. I would like to know if anyone has actually tried this... I know if it is possible it should be out there already but hey sometimes its the simple ideas that get overlooked... but in general I know this is wishful thinking.the point is to create a self powering generator.. if at all to maybe create enough extra power to trickle charge a set of batteries like those used in photovoltaic systems. Also first answer.. if you lose energy right off the bat the system would not keep running. Think about what you said. moreResolved Question: How Do You Figure Out What Size Automatic Generator You need To Keep A house Going When The Power Goes Out?

Dear Friends, I have 2001 model ford focus. Yesterday battary warn light turned on and took car to electrician. Electrician checked accumulator, it was charging and there is not any problem he said. After checked generator. The voltage out from generator was 14.1-14.3 Volt. He said its ok also, but still battary warn light is on. When i start the car the light is of but during 2 minutes it the battary light turnes on.Do you have any ideas what could be reason of that? Im in Georgia, Tbilisi so that mostly local masters dont understand the system of US cars. Thank you in advance. moreResolved Question: Reducing pollution ?
Why don't they introduce laws governing the size of vehicles in each catargory . A BMW M5 is larger than most mini buses yet it only has four seats the same as a BMW from the early 80's which is similar in size to todays mini , yet the fuel consumption in either car is not a great deal different . If manufacturers were forced to limit the dimensions of their cars they would have no choice but to make their cars more user freindly in order to get ahead of the competition . Hey presto you have the world leading profiteers in pollution fighting each other to produce the most economical car ! Everyone knows that the technology to make a car do 300 miles a gallon has been available for years (a small generator can run approx 8 hours on 1 gallon , an electric motor can power any vehicle) And before the petrolheads start an electric motor can produce more torque and power than any petrol engined car available to the public . moreResolved Question: Honda Cg125 2002 electric start ac generator wanted?

What causes global warming? Carbon dioxide and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up. Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution -- they produce 2.5 billion tons every year. Automobiles, the second largest source, create nearly 1.5 billion tons of CO2 annually. Here's the good news: technologies exist today to make cars that run cleaner and burn less gas, modernize power plants and generate electricity from nonpolluting sources, and cut our electricity use through energy efficiency. The challenge is to be sure these solutions are put to use. Is the earth really getting hotter? Yes. Although local temperatures fluctuate naturally, over the past 50 years the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded history. And experts think the trend is accelerating: the 10 hottest years on record have all occurred since 1990. Scientists say that unless we curb global warming emissions, average U.S. temperatures could be 3 to 9 degrees higher by the end of the century. Are warmer temperatures causing bad things to happen? Global warming is already causing damage in many parts of the United States. In 2002, Colorado, Arizona and Oregon endured their worst wildfire seasons ever. The same year, drought created severe dust storms in Montana, Colorado and Kansas, and floods caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage in Texas, Montana and North Dakota. Since the early 1950s, snow accumulation has declined 60 percent and winter seasons have shortened in some areas of the Cascade Range in Oregon and Washington. Of course, the impacts of global warming are not limited to the United States. In 2003, extreme heat waves caused more than 20,000 deaths in Europe and more than 1,500 deaths in India. And in what scientists regard as an alarming sign of events to come, the area of the Arctic's perennial polar ice cap is declining at the rate of 9 percent per decade. Is global warming making hurricanes worse? Global warming doesn't create hurricanes, but it does make them stronger and more dangerous. Because the ocean is getting warmer, tropical storms can pick up more energy and become more powerful. So global warming could turn, say, a category 3 storm into a much more dangerous category 4 storm. In fact, scientists have found that the destructive potential of hurricanes has greatly increased along with ocean temperature over the past 35 years. Is there really cause for serious concern? Yes. Global warming is a complex phenomenon, and its full-scale impacts are hard to predict far in advance. But each year scientists learn more about how global warming is affecting the planet, and many agree that certain consequences are likely to occur if current trends continue. Among these: Melting glaciers, early snowmelt and severe droughts will cause more dramatic water shortages in the American West. Rising sea levels will lead to coastal flooding on the Eastern seaboard, in Florida, and in other areas, such as the Gulf of Mexico. Warmer sea surface temperatures will fuel more intense hurricanes in the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Forests, farms and cities will face troublesome new pests and more mosquito-borne diseases. Disruption of habitats such as coral reefs and alpine meadows could drive many plant and animal species to extinction. Could global warming trigger a sudden catastrophe? Recently, researchers -- and even the U.S. Defense Department -- have investigated the possibility of abrupt climate change, in which gradual global warming triggers a sudden shift in the earth's climate, causing parts of the world to dramatically heat up or cool down in the span of a few years. In February 2004, consultants to the Pentagon released a report laying out the possible impacts of abrupt climate change on national security. In a worst-case scenario, the study concluded, global warming could make large areas of the world uninhabitable and cause massive food and water shortages, sparking widespread migrations and war. While this prospect remains highly speculative, many of global warming's effects are already being observed -- and felt. And the idea that such extreme change is possible underscores the urgent need to start cutting global warming pollution. What country is the largest source of global warming pollution? The United States. Though Americans make up just 4 percent of the world's population, we produce 25 percent of the carbon dioxide pollution from fossil-fuel burning -- by far the largest share of any country. In fact, the United States emits more carbon dioxide than China, India and Japan, combined. Clearly America ought to take a leadership role in solving the problem. And as the world's top developer of new technologies, we are well positioned to do so -- we already have the know-how. How can we cut global warming pollution? It's simple: By reducing pollution from vehicles and power plants. Right away, we should put existing technologies for building cleaner cars and more modern electricity generators into widespread use. We can increase our reliance on renewable energy sources such as wind, sun and geothermal. And we can manufacture more efficient appliances and conserve energy. Why aren't these technologies more commonplace now? Because, while the technologies exist, the corporate and political will to put them into widespread use does not. Many companies in the automobile and energy industries put pressure on the White House and Congress to halt or delay new laws or regulations -- or even to stop enforcing existing rules -- that would drive such changes. From requiring catalytic converters to improving gas mileage, car companies have fought even the smallest measure to protect public health and the environment. If progress is to be made, the American people will have to demand it. Do we need new laws requiring industry to cut emissions of global warming pollution? Yes. The Bush administration is promoting an initiative in which energy companies cut emissions only if they choose to do so. As the past 10 years have clearly shown, though, voluntary programs do not stop the growth of emissions. Proposals to cap emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping pollutants from America's largest sources -- power plants, industrial facilities, and transportation fuels -- are gaining support in Congress. Stricter efficiency requirements for electric appliances will also help reduce pollution. One example is the 30 percent tighter standard now in place for home central air conditioners and heat pumps, a Clinton-era achievement that will prevent the emission of 51 million metric tons of carbon -- the equivalent of taking 34 million cars off the road for one year. The new rule survived a Bush administration effort to weaken it when, in January 2004, a federal court sided with an NRDC-led coalition and reversed the administration's rollback. Is it possible to cut power plant pollution and still have enough electricity? Yes. First, we must use more efficient appliances and equipment in our homes and offices to reduce our electricity needs. We can also phase out the decades-old, coal-burning power plants that generate most of our electricity and replace them with cleaner plants. And we can increase our use of renewable energy sources such as wind and sun. Some states are moving in this direction: California has required its largest utilities to get 20 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2017, and New York has pledged to compel power companies to provide 25 percent of the state's electricity from renewable sources by 2013. How can we cut car pollution? Cost-effective technologies to reduce global warming pollution from cars and light trucks of all sizes are available now. There is no reason to wait and hope that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will solve the problem in the future. Hybrid gas-electric engines can cut global warming pollution by one-third or more today; hybrid sedans, SUVs and trucks from several automakers are already on the market. But automakers should be doing a lot more: They've used a legal loophole to make SUVs far less fuel efficient than they could be; the popularity of these vehicles has generated a 20 percent increase in transportation-related carbon dioxide pollution since the early 1990s. Closing this loophole and requiring SUVs, minivans and pick-up trucks to be as efficient as cars would cut 120 million tons of carbon dioxide pollution a year by 2010. If automakers used the technology they have right now to raise fuel economy standards for new cars and light trucks to a combined 40 m.p.g., carbon dioxide pollution would eventually drop by more than 650 million tons per year as these vehicles replaced older models. For more information on hybrid vehicles, see NRDC's hybrid guide. What can I do to help fight global warming? There are many simple steps you can take right now to cut global warming pollution. Make conserving energy a part of your daily routine. Each time you choose a compact fluorescent light bulb over an incandescent bulb, for example, you'll lower your energy bill and keep nearly 700 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air over the bulb's lifetime. By opting for a refrigerator with the Energy Star label -- indicating it uses at least 15 percent less energy than the federal requirement -- over a less energy-efficient model, you can reduce carbon dioxide pollution by nearly a ton in total. moreResolved Question: How does this suspicious Ebay scam (I think) work?
