Open Question: Computer acting weird?

My computer has been acting weird off and on for a while now. It usually lasts for maybe an hour, then stops, and starts again later. In both IE and Firefox, if I have more than one tab open, it will automatically close the tab I click and bring me back to the first one. When I try to left click in Firefox, it brings up the scroll thing. I can't double-click desktop icons, and I can't open bookmarks, history, or anything. My computer has Vista, if that helps. Any advice? more

Open Question: A visiting younger family member deleted my Internet Explorer history, is it recoverable?

Okay, here's the deal, I have a new HP Pavilion elite desktop that I've had hardly 2 weeks, maybe actually 2 weeks, but since the monitor showed up first with the printer, I forget the actual day the computer showed up. That's irrelevant I guess, but anyhow, I've been using it for about 2 weeks and obviously visiting websites during that time, and I didn't get around to either adding to favorites or e-mailing myself certain websites that I wanted to remember (because there was a particular article or I liked the site, etc...) and today, after a lengthy family "get together" of sorts, I went to use my computer after my nephew was on it, and turns out my history is gone. I know I didn't delete it and I have the number of days set at 21 to store the history, so he had to have done it. I don't even care what sites he visited, but I'm annoyed because I cannot retrieve the sites I went to. I tried Dutch Duck because they have a free trial and that didn't work, it's only recovering all the stuff that I've visited since they left before I found out the history was gone, when I went to search for a site I was at 2 days ago. Then I tried IEHV because it's free and I know a friend who used it but it didn't recover any of the missing history. I'm thinking they're permanently gone, but is there any way to possibly find them? If not, I'll deal of course, but I am so annoyed that my nephew did this because I truly couldn't care less what site he visited that he was trying to hide from me or his parents, he had no right to mess with my new computer. Oh, and just in case you're wondering, he was on it because I asked him to help me with my iTunes because I had a problem with my iPod and it not being recognized, so I thought he was just doing that for me. I told him not to touch anything else seeing as how the computer is brand new. Well, if anything I've learned my lesson. Lol. Hopefully though someone can help. Thanks. more

Voting Question: I have a gateway and it is telling me that a program is either corrupt or missing and that it cant turn on?

okay, i got a gateway computer in either 2006 or 2007 and it has a history of viruses and breaking and what not. my dad is like having my own personal geeksquad and he can fix virtually any computer- pc, laptop, anything. So I was on my computer this morning and it restarted. when it got to when it should take me to my desktop, it was just a black screen and it said "your computer cannot restart because the following program is either corrupt or missing. you can fix this problem by pressing 'r' on the first page". so i did that, and it took me to a repair page. the problem is that it is saying i need a disc of some sort. i cant find the cd. is there anyway i can trick my computer or something? i know it sounds stupid, but my dad said i cant do anything without the disc and i was wondering if any other computer gooroos out there have any advice. thanx!! kellyn more

I have a laptop. My dad and brother have desktops, my brother has the wireless adaptor box (not sure if that's really what it is called). We all use the same network of course. I was looking up stuff about a job last night that I may be getting, and I didn't want my dad to know about it yet. I was just wondering if he could see my browsing history from his computer since we are on the same network or would he have to be on my laptop to see? Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Why are people so nosy?

well anyways my parent always check on what im doing on the computer. I dont go on myspace or any of that bad stuff.They are SO nosy!Well whenever im on the computer and my mom is on the bedroom she quietly sneaks to see what im doing! And everytime i get off the computer and do something else she clicks on back to see what websites i went on. I get so aggravated i delete the history close the page(so they can't go back) and open it again then leave.I know it makes then even More nosy i GET SO FRUSTRATED!Im using my dad's laptop so the desktop is next to this computer and she always takes a glance of what i do every 5 miliseconds.. oh yeah we also have this thing where you check your weight and its next to this laptop and she checks like 5 times a day just to take a glance on what im doing. everytime she goes on the weight thing she takes a glance on what im doing and i look back at her to give her "Get out please!" face.She looks down when i look away to type she looks back up.And my dad is is like 1 inch from the computer staring at iti dont watch that disgusting stuffand i said its my DAD's laptop more

really slow! So I've decided to upgrade my memory. It's a 2006 Dell Desktop Windows XP. Thing is, will I have to buy more memory every three years to keep it running smoothly? (If I purchase the $30-$40 memory) Or will it be sufficient space for awhile? Thanks (also p.s. q #2: this isn't as important, but besides clearing history caches etc. and defragging, cleaning, checking disk for errors, and having a reliable adware/spyware scanner installed, do you have any other tips on keeping a speedy system?? Like settings that will allow graphics but not keep them logged in memory or whatever slows the system down? Also I realized my computer is only slow when connected to the internet)Oops! I'm not exactly what you would call a "bold" person. I'm very shy and somewhat conservative. I've been with my boyfriend for a year and we live together. He's always told me he doesn't need to look at porn because I'm enough for him...Part of me figured he was only saying that because he knew it would make me uncomfortable if I knew he was looking at porn...but this morning I accidentally typed the wrong letter into the Google searchbox and all these porn sites came up in the history! Then later I found several "pictures" saved to the computer's desktop. He and I are the only ones who use this computer and I know I did not put these pictures there! Should I be worried or is this normal?I know I said I was shy...but I meant I'm shy to almost everyone but HIM now that we've been together for a while. He is my first and only and I'm begging him for it nearly every night, but he likes to do it every other night or so because he likes to make me wait for it and want him even more...I'm worried because he is not deprived of sex by ANY means at all. more

Okay so I have windows vista on a gateway laptop, I'm using Internet Explorer 7.0, and my default search engine is Google, and my favorite word is Banana(wait for it, its necessary) So I often search the word banana in the address bar to see what google has to say about bananas, however today when I tried it I was redirected to a different website, its not an as website or anything, in fact I've been there before...It's an episode of the Taiwanese Soap Opera I'm currently watching the exact url is: http://www.mysoju.com/fullscreen/knock-knock-loving-you/episode-5/part-2/ also when Internet Explorer gives me suggestions to websites I've Recently Visited it says; Registration Path http://www.eltpath.com (a whole bunch of stuff hereeeeeeeeeeeeeee) but it also says: email=bananasucker331@hotmail.com then it says something about Miami Fl and 33177 earlier today my cousin stiven clicked on an ad, it was to get a free macbook, I called him stupid since it obviously wouldnt work.. but he tried anyway, I'm not sure what email he used but I know that isnt his...I dont know anyone by that email however we live in miami fl and his zip code is 33177.. so maybe that has something to do with it.. I have tried so far to delete all programs potentially harmful to my computer, I closed all process trees in the Windows task manager under iexplorer and dvm just in case and I scanned my computer with windows defender as well as made sure my firewall was up... but I'm still being redirected everything seems normal and I also deleted all cookies, information I've put in forms, browsing history... everything....! but I'M STILL BEING REDIRECTED... I can go to any other website and when I type in the website address I get redirected toooo, it goes to the normal website...its ONLY BANANAS. I can still search bananas by going to google.com and searching it... but I dont want this to be potentially harmful to my computer... I'm pretty sure its the ad thing... also I tried going to eltpath.com (the first part of the url next to redirection path in my suggestions) but it just stays blank... previously my computer was, as told by my cousin almost hacked... what happened was there was a box saying that another computer had the same IP adress as mine and all the windows of internet explorer I had open said ([{This site has been closed to try and protect your computer etc..}]), I again closed all process trees under iexplorer and dvm, and closed all windows...Just thought I might add that.. also I get my internet connection from a Linksys connected to my desktop computer, its a really old computer and runs EXTREMELY slow but still works if you've got patience and its okay with viruses and whatnot its just I've used up to much memory on it also my brother's laptop is as well connected to the internet by the linksys...WHAT CAN I POSSIBLY DO TO STOP IT FROM REDIRECTING AND SAVE MY LAPTOP FROM HARM>.< pleaseee I'll love you forever... Resolved Question: Should I buy adobe elements 6 for mac (the computer I have) or elements 7 for windows & use parallels?

I do have parallels desktop for my macbook but I rarely use it. of course if I were to buy adobe photoshop elements I would want the most up to date version; but so far elements 7 has only come out for windows. And if you look at the history of elements for mac in the past they have skipped a version before coming out with a new one. Should I: A) buy adobe photoshop elements 7 for windows and use it with my parallels desktop or B) buy adobe photoshop elements 6 for mac and hope 7's new features aren't that great or that it will not be that expensive to upgrade thoughts???????????interesting, but what does GIMP do? Resolved Question: Popular websites are not working on my laptop. [example: Google, MySpace, Youtube, etc.]?

Lately, popular websites such as Google, MySpace, Youtube, Facebook and a few others just simply will not load. It keeps saying "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page," and "Address not valid." This isn't making sense because they work on desktop computers with no problems. In fact, out of nowhere, I was lucky enough to be able to load Yahoo, finally! Yahoo was one of the sites that would not load, but now, I can finally get onto Answers.Yahoo.com to ask for help in my desperate situation. Here are some of the things I tried: Resetting all internet settings Deleting all browsing history, cookies, etc. Reinstalling Internet Explorer Using Mozilla Firefox Enabling Java in internet settings Adding the sites that won't load into the "trusted" sites list Deleting all "blocked" sites from the list Scanning for viruses Enabling and disabling pop-up blocker Using proxy sites to connect to the pages I want to view + and more I was fortunate enough to come out of this with Yahoo working again, so I can't complain too much. But honestly, I can't think of anything else to try, except maybe resetting my entire laptop to factory settings, which I know will work, but I don't want to go through that again. If you have any intelligent suggestions, please let me know. I don't want twenty different responses telling me, "You have a virus!" or "Stop watching porn!" Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Computer code (0xc0000005) a dead or dying hard drive?

I Recently given a desktop computer from a relative who is moving address and cant fix the computer and don't want it and was going to scrap it The computer model: Dell Dimension 2400. Hard drive: Barracuda 7200.7 all other hardware original to the 2400 model. Inside state: checked all wiring and components looks intact and in order. software: windows xp, guessing sp1. Previous history: minium security, probably minium updating. The problem: The computer power up onto a black screen with the following text on it:- F2 setup option F12 boot menu and below that "Bios revision A05" If i select no F- number option after 5 seconds it carries on to one of two places..either to and xp loading screen just before widows logs on..where it states "preparing network connections where it stays there forever. Or in logs on to the desktop on xp with wallpaper and no icon or start menu or anything...followed with message "the application has failed to initialise properly (0xc0000005C)" . Is the hard drive to blame, if so is it recoverable? more

I have always had a great relationship with my son, who is now 17. He'll be going off to college in the fall. He has been interested in "anime" for a while now, and even showed me a couple episodes of a show he likes. It looked appropriate, and I didn't mind if he watched it. It wasn't porn or anything. A while ago I woke up in the middle of the night and had to go to the bathroom. I saw a light coming out of his room so I went to check on him. Since I didn't want to wake him up if he was asleep, I quietly opened the door and saw him at his computer wearing headphones and masturbating to a video of animated girls having sex. I know all teenage boys masturbate to porn now and then, but I find it disturbing that these were animated characters. They looked really underage too, like they were in middle school. I was shocked and couldn't sleep for the rest of the night. I never talked to him about it. Just the other day he left his laptop on while he was at school. Since I didn't want to boot up my old and slow desktop, I decided to log in to my email on his laptop before I turned it off. His browsing history was full of websites with really young looking anime characters. I knew most teenage boys look at porn, but is animated porn something to worry about? I didn't see any porn with real women, just "anime" characters. I really trusted him, and we always had a great relationship. How should I break it to him without losing his trust? I'm really worried.I am confident he hasn't been abused or molested. Resolved Question: Internet browsers running slow?

My family's been having issues with using any internet browsers to surf the web (Mozilla, IE, Chrome, Safari). The browsers run very slow. Websites take forever to load, and that's when we're lucky. For the most part the websites times out or will load the website just in HTML. At first I assumed it must be a connection problem via the modem as all laptops as well as the desktop have the same exact issue. I tested the internet speed, and we are receiving the same amount of bandwidth. Also to throw another wrench into the mix, my iPod touch has absolutely no problem using the internet (web pages load quickly and correctly). Also I play World of Warcraft (a somewhat heavy bandwidth using online game) which runs absolutely fine, no latency. So it appears its just the Internet Browsers on the computers that are giving us the trouble. I've deleted temp files, cookies, history and etc. Reset Internet Options. No go. I've contacted our ISP (Verizon), but they have not been much help. Any ideas? Anyone? more

Ok so weird things have been happening with my latop this past month. no one knows my password to the actual computer because its like 30 characters long. i use my city's wireless internet. and the computer is pretty new. only about 4 months old. so i noticed my home page would change sometimes. and today a noticeable amount of my desktop icons are gone. also the font size on the internet pages is much smaller and for some reason all the passwords to the social networks im on are deleted. like they went to tools>delete browsing history>delete passwords. this is freaking me out. did my computer somehow get hacked from the city's internet???? plz plz answer!!!! thanks!! xoxi have an anti-virus software already. im using Avira AntiVir Personal. i heard it was good. but im thinking of getting a new one. but i dont know how to uninstall Avira. so this a double question now. lol more

Recently my Brother has moved in and we have a computer which him and my Mother use downstairs. I have been through the history after finding naughty pop ups and things being downloaded on the Desktop, and I have found a lot of porn sites in the History. This isn't just normal porn but very horrible porn such as Brutal and Forced Sex, but nothing with children, thankfully! This isn't just one websites, but tonnes! I check daily on the computer and this seems to be every night, 7 days a week! He has recently split up from his partner but she said that she has seen this before and he denied all acknowledgement of viewing these websites. My Mother has told him before to not go on any dirty websites as she doesn't want her computer raided with Viruses! Why has he got this horrible addiction? Do you think he is curious? He is a normal guy in his early 30s, with great friends, Family and a good job. Can anyone out there help please! He obviously has a problem but shouting at him doesn't help anything. Hes had a good upbringing, but hes the type of person where if someone said something he doesn't like, he will turn a blind eye. I am a 24 yo, tall slim girl, C cup boobs, and my boyfriend says i turn him on, but the other day I was on his computer looking up something and i found his history is mostly porn sites, lesbian action, younger girls etc. I thought well thats ok, but its been happeneing every day when im at work (he works nights, i work days) and im beginning to feel like i am not good enough for him. Resolved Question: My My Documents contents has been deleted. Is there any way to recover the contents?

I turned on my computer the other day, and was presented with a message regarding Windows Explorer. I noticed that my background had been reset to default, and many desktop icons were missing (.exe files/images or files saved to the desktop) except shortcuts. When i opened My Documents, i noticed that all my files had been deleted. I opened Internet Explorer and noticed that my favorites and history had all been deleted, and i kept getting messages on the toolbar asking if i wanted to take a tour of windows xp. It was like i had performed a complete system re-boot, and my computer had been wiped. But all files in my C drive were still intact. Also, i had recently uploaded a crap-load of videos onto my My Videos folder, and i noticed that when i looked at remaining disk space, it still had the same remaining space as when i had finished uploading all those videos. Help me, howcan i recover the files, or at least stop this from happening again? Note: itsa pretty old computer (used to have 98) that i've upgraded with new RAM, disk space and XP, and have recently wiped. It still has a pretty shitty power supply and CPU more

Resolved Question: Where's the old Veoh TV?

About a year ago I downloaded something from Veoh. It was something like Veoh TV or somewhere around it. The thing is, my computer blacked out and deleted everything, so now I can't find it. When I downloaded it, it put itself as a desktop icon. When I click on it, It's like a library of it's own, like its own version of iTunes; it doesn't go to the internet. And when I open it, It's like a browser, and underneath are episodes that it recommends to me using my video history (what i've watched and they find stuff related to them). I I just checked Veoh.com (which I haven't in probably a year) and now I can't find it in its download section. I just want to know where to get this back, because I like this better than their new video compass or whatever it's called. more

Recently my friend requested that I have a get together at my house. I agreed since he had several at his house already and I felt sorry for him. I asked my parents they agreed. But along with their agreement cam plenty of warnings, I assured them, everything would be fine as I had been over my friends homes plenty of times and nothing ever got out of hand. My parents deeded to give us some privacy so they went to visit relatives So I invited about 7 of my friends over, and they went completely nuts. The friend who requested that I host the get-together in the first place, deleted my whole desktop on my computer including assignments and other important things, he viewed porn and went through my history. Other stuff that happened was I got locked out of my own home After warning everyone several times about how much I took care of my consoles and to not touch them, they took my play station 3 and hid it, and just threw the game cases under the couches. (im always very careful about not scratching cases and they damaged them.) They got random objects from around he house and played jenga with them They created a big mess A friend who I practically convinced not to commit suicide even joined it on the fun And in the end they blamed me for all this happening because I didn’t want them drinking alcohol Now don’t get the wrong Idea these people aren’t usually like this they always act responsibly, and I dint nothing to provoke this. I have a couple of old computers (2 windows-based desktops and 2 Mac laptops) that I want to donate or recycle. In order to ensure that no personal information is left on them, how can I erase the hard drives? I understand that even if you delete certain files, there is a history of information left on the computer. I want to completely erase all files including the operating systems. Help! Our computer is playing audio as if we have a window open...but we don't! We have Windows Vista and we think we may have a virus. We already checked all user desktops and no windows are open. There is something playing right now as I type...it is as if I have youtube on or something. Resolved Question: Computer or internet running slow.?

My computer is running slow. Within 30 minutes to an hour of starting the computer and surfing the internet, it starts to run slow. Then, it freezes a little. I restart the computer and everything is fine for the next 30 minutes to an hour. It only happens when I'm surfing the internet. I'm not sure if it's my connection speed or not because I have the AT&T PRO DSL package which should be fast enough for what I'm doing. I run the defragment daily to once a week, have a good Virus Scan/Adware/Spyware/malware program which I run daily, I also delete history, cache, temp files, and cookies daily, use Ccleaner, use regcleaner, delete desktop icons. I have some music and movies on my computer, but it's not much so it's shouldn't be taking up space. Any help would be appreciated.Only when I'm surfing the internet, Wasn't sure how to find how large my hard drive so, I'll list some details... I live with two other people. We all have separate laptops but one "community" desktop with separate "user profiles" that are password protected. When one of our laptops breaks, needs repair, etc, we use the desktop. One of my roommates is the IT guy at a local company and knows the ins and outs of computers. Can he, under his user profile, view places I've been. I don't go to any controversial sites but I check my personal email and pay bills all using info I don't want him having. Plus my family comes over sometimes and my grandmother, who knows computers and uses my profile, to access the internet. Is there a history that saves all our viewed sites together so she can't tell whose is whose? I don't care where either one of my roommates go on it but I don't want us tied together like that. i see a lot of people have the same problem I have. I have read 30 or 40 post on the net and none have fixed the problem. Ok here it is. Equipment is laptop dell, inspiron 8200, XP Home, SP2. Wireless card Linksys, instant wireless Network PC Card ver.3, model No: WPC11 ver.3. Router also Linksys, wireless G 2.4GHz. History I have 3 computers running. #1, Is a Desktop hard wired to the router running XP Home. #2 is a desktop with a Linksys wireless adapter running XP Home as well. #3 is a laptop with a built in wireless card running vista, All 3 work great and I have never had a problem with any of them. Now my brother just moved back and his son has the dell 8200 and I cannot get it to work. The computer and the card works fine, it sees my wireless network when I click on it, it says windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again. But I have 5 full bars and it’s still there. But some of my Neighbors show up on the list and if I click on them it then does what its suppose to and ask for the password. So what I have done next is gone to the advanced steps and added my SSID and my network authentication is set to shared and data is set to WEP and when I put my network key in it says: the network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters. I read one post that said to just put the first 5 symbols in the network key and I did and it takes it but, when I try to connect it says the network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again (again). So I switch the network authentication to open and disabled the data encryption and then try to connect and same thing. What’s going on? Please help. And keep it as simple as you can for me and the other 5 or 6 thousand other people that seem to be having the same problem. Thank you for any and all your help. My husband and I took in a friend of ours who is pregnant and has a three year old. She had no where to go and we thought we would help her out. We thought we could trust her not to go through our personal stuff. She has been told that the lap top computer is off limits. She seemed ok with that. We have a desktop computer that she is allowed to use to check her email. My husband and I went out of town for the day. My husband noticed that around 3 pm his blackberry started signing out of his emails on and off. He checked the history for that day on the lap top when we got home. It turns out that she went through our email account. She went into a folder labeled "legal documents" and snooped through a few of our legal letters between our lawyer and us. She snooped through another folder we have of letters from a dear friend of ours. My husband should have put a password on his lap top or at least taken the auto sign in on his messenger off (that's how she got in). She was the last person we thought would ever do something like this, but obviously we were wrong. We took screen shots of the history that proves she was in our email. It first shows history of her email and a few other sites and then our email, folders, and documents that were opened. It is all time and date stamped. I want to know if we can press charges. I am not going to, I just want to be able to tell her that pressing charges would be an option. We are kicking her out this week. She is not on our lease. We have made sure that she has a place to go now as we do not want to just put her and her son out on the street. We have now locked both computers with passwords and all loose documents around the house have been locked up and our door locks are all being changed. to keep my computer well maintained i reboot when i see my systems logo i start tapping f8 this brought me to a safe mode screen then i scroled down to last good configuration when my system acted correctly(advance) then when i got back to my desktop i hit start>programs>accessories>system tools when i used win xp there was a calender i hit the first lit number to my far left my system restore and reboot. when that was complete then when i got back to my desktop i hit start>settings>control panel then i hit the internet options icon there i delete my history and my cookies and i exit back to my desktop. now i go back to system tools and now i defragment this was a very important step so i made sure it completed. now from my desktop i hit my computer icon and i right clicked C:\ and hit properties there i hit the tools tab and hit clean disk i just hit okay because i was already signed up to scan disk i got a message do you want to schedule a scan disk i hit okay and reboot properly my system reboot and scan disk quickly. now i went back to scan disk but this time i unchecked scan disk and checked search for lost clusters this took about twenty minutes but i noticed how much faster my computer was when it was running very slow before. now i was thinking that if it happens for me i bet it will help your computer too so give it a try. another thing i highly recommend is take your tower to a computer repairman and have him install 4gb of new ram into your system it will increase your speed and performance. good luck i hope this was helpful to anyone who read this. more
